Management and Regulations
Albany’s mix of urban development and waterways offers natural beauty—but also increases the risk of water pollution. Urban runoff carries litter, pesticides, motor oil, and other pollutants into storm drains, which discharge into the San Francisco Bay.
To reduce stormwater pollution, Albany complies with the Municipal Regional Stormwater Permit (MRP), issued by the San Francisco Regional Water Quality Control Board. The permit requires cities to implement pollution prevention measures across development, maintenance, and public outreach activities.
Provision C.3 mandates stormwater controls on new and redevelopment projects, including site design, treatment measures, and flow duration controls for larger projects. Requirements vary by project type.
Provision C.10 requires cities to reduce trash entering storm drains through control measures and monitoring.
The City’s Clean Water/Urban Runoff Program also includes street sweeping, inspections, enforcement, and education to protect our local waterways. To determine your project’s category and applicable requirements, please refer to the City's stormwater guidelines.
