Smoke Alarm Tips

Smoke Alarm Maintenance Tips

  • Test your alarms monthly and every time you change your clocks.
  • Replace batteries annually—unless using a long-life battery (refer to the manufacturer’s instructions).Hardwired alarms also have backup batteries that need maintenance.
  • Vacuum or gently clean around the alarm to remove dust and debris.
  • Check the expiration date on the back of the alarm and replace any unit over 10 years old, even if it still works.

These small steps can make a big difference in ensuring your home and loved ones are protected in the event of a fire.

Check batteries when you change the clocks

Smoke alarms are either battery-powered or hardwired into your home’s electrical system. Hardwired alarms typically include a backup battery.

  • Battery-powered alarms should have their batteries replaced once a year—unless they use a long-life battery (refer to the owner’s manual).
  • All batteries should be checked and replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Check your smoke alarms during the spring and fall time changes. When you do:

  • Check the expiration date on the alarm
  • Replace the battery if needed
  • Gently clean dust from vents to ensure smoke can enter freely

Remember: All smoke alarms—battery-powered and hardwired—should be replaced every 10 years. Taking these simple steps can significantly increase your family’s chances of surviving a fire.
