Climate Action

The Sustainability Division manages the City's urban and natural environment, including climate action and adaptation planning and implementation; hazard mitigation and disaster resilience; resource reduction, recycling, and solid waste management; creek and open space planning, and more.

The Sustainability Division strives to protect this critical habitat from the effects of climate change, while also ensuring social equity, a resilient community, and a thriving local economy. adaptation planning and implementation; hazard mitigation and disaster resilience; resource reduction, recycling, and solid waste management; creek and open space planning, and more.

The Sustainability Division also serves as staff liaison to the City's Climate Action Committee. 

On December 2, 2019, the Albany City Council adopted the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP), setting targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2035 and reach net zero by 2045. The City is currently on track to meet these goals, with progress tracked annually through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Residents can support this effort by joining the Carbon-Free Albany Challenge at carbonfreealbany.org, a platform that provides tools to reduce emissions and contribute to a carbon-free Albany by 2050.

The City of Albany offers a Heat Pump HVAC Rebate Program to help residents replace gas-powered heating systems with energy-efficient electric heat pump systems. Rebates range from $1,500 to $4,500 depending on system type and income level. The program supports Albany’s Climate Action goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from residential buildings.

The City of Albany’s Induction Cooktop Lending Program allows residents to borrow a portable induction cooktop and compatible cookware to try out this clean, electric cooking technology at home. Induction cooking is faster, safer, and more energy-efficient than gas or traditional electric stoves. The program supports the City’s climate goals by encouraging a shift away from gas appliances.
