Business Licenses

Starting on January 2, 2024, the City of Albany partnered with Avenu Insights & Analytics to issue and maintain business licenses through an online portal. Updating accounts and making payments online will provide the flexibility to manage your account at your convenience.

Renewals 

Renewal notices for 2025 have been issued starting on November 22, 2024.  Follow the instructions on the notice to log in and file for the new year. The due date for the business license tax is January 31, 2025. Any payments received after that date will begin to incur late fees and penalties.

New applicants

You will need to register your business to generate an Avenu account number. Follow all prompts, and you will eventually be provided a checkbox to confirm your business is new to receive an Avenu account number.

How to Pay Online

Step 1.File Online

File online at: https://Albany.bizlicenseonline.com. First time users to the site, click Sign Up, then Business Account.

Step 2.Complete User Information

  1. Complete User Information fields to create a username and password.
  2. Store your password securely.
  3. Select a secret question for security purposes.

Step 3.New or Renewal

Upon completion of the above, select if your business is New or is a Renewal.

  • Renewals: Enter account number provided to your business by Avenu, and your business name exactly as shown on your notice from Avenu. You will subsequently be able to access your online account. Note: Do not use your City of Albany customer number to create your online account.
  • New applicants: You will need to register your business to generate an Avenu account number. Follow all prompts, and you will eventually be provided a checkbox to confirm your business is new to receive an Avenu account number.

To access and manage your online account in the future, you will need to provide your username and password. For set-up assistance and account support, please contact Avenu directly at muniblsupport@avenuinsights.com or (866) 240-3665. If there is missing information from your account profile that is required to be updated, you will be prompted for completion.

How to Pay In-Person

For those that would like to pay their business licenses in person, visit us at City Hall – Finance Department, 1000 San Pablo Avenue:

  • Monday – Thursday
    • 8:30am – 12:00pm; 1:00pm – 5:00pm
  • Friday
    • 8:30am – 12:30pm

If you have ceased doing business in the City, please use the Avenu portal to submit the cease notification.

In order to do business in Albany, you need to obtain a Business License. To apply for a business license, please go to https://Albany.bizlicenseonline.com.

Plan on obtaining a license within 15 days of commencing business to avoid late penalties and interest. Business owners must also be aware that they may require a fire inspection, scheduled through and performed by the Albany Fire Department, prior to completing the business license processes. Contractors and trades seeking building permits must possess an active business license prior to receiving a permit. A list of fees can be obtained from the City's Master Fee Schedule.

Business License Renewal payments are due January 31st of each year, whether a bill is received, or not. 

Any payments received after January 31st will begin to incur late fees and penalties per City Code section § 5-2.10. Penalty for Non-Payment of Annual Business Tax.
